Seabiscuit (2003)
Based on the novel written by Laura Hillenbrand, this movie tells the story of Seabiscuit, a beloved thoroughbred racehorse from the 1930's. The "Biscuit"
was small and unattractive compared to the black 17 hh War Admiral, son of Man o'War, and underappreciated as War Admiral drew most of the media's attention with his successful racing record.
The movie actually focusses more on the people in Seabiscuit's life, like his jockey, Red Pollard, his trainer, Tom Smith, and his owner, Charles S. Howard. It follows the life of the horse through the
great match race of 1938: Seabiscuit vs. War Admiral.
My Thoughts: The movie will be enjoyed by horse lovers and non-horse lovers alike. It was nominated for the 2003 Academy Award for Best Drama!

The Black Stallion (1979)
This is a beautifully filmed story about a boy and stallion who get shipwrecked on a desert island. Alec and "The Black" develop a close friendship on the island which continues through the rescue and return home.
Mickey Rooney plays a trainer who prepares Alec and the Black for a big horse race. Overall a great story for
the horse lover.
My only criticism of this film
is that the stallion is played by "Cass Ole", a mature Arabian Stallion, and he is entered into a 3-year-old thoroughbred race. This
would never happen in real life.
.
My Thoughts: This is a great film for children who love horses.

The sequel to "The Black Stallion." The Black, aka "Shetan", is stolen from his American home and returned to his homeland: the deserts of Arabia. To save
his horse, Alec must travel to Arabia and compete in a desert horse race to win his stallion back. This time around, the Black races other Arabians!

The Young Black Stallion (2003)
A Walt Disney film that was originally released in IMAX Theatres and tells the story of "The Black" before he left his home in Arabia.
A young girl named Neera befriends a wild black colt whom she names "Shetan".
The film is too short and has lots of corny horse bits like rearing horses whinnying.
My Thoughts: A renter for young horse crazy girls.
IMDB: Internet Movie Database Summary
Rotten Tomatoes: User Reviews
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002)
A fun animated film about a wild stallion, his experience with man and his love for a mare.
My Thoughts: A great film for kids and the young at heart.

Hidalgo (2004)
This is the story of rider Frank Hopkins and his Paint mustang, Hidalgo. Hopkins is invited to enter
a 3000-mile horse race in the Arabian desert. Hidalgo and Frank travel to Arabia, have lots of adventures and
run the rather exciting race.
There are a few corny horse bits in this film. For one, horses in the movie always whinny while rearing. I've been
riding for 28 years and experienced a lot of rearing horses. They don't whinny. Also the big horse race in Arabia,
should be run by Arabians, however, most of the horses in the movie are Andulusian, a Spanish breed.
My Thoughts: This is renter for older children and adults.
